This part of the Brazilian coast falls just below the equator so it has fairly moderate weather with no extreme summer or winter. One of the worst droughts was recorded in 1877-1878, known as the Great Drought or ‘Grande Seca'. It destroyed nearly all the livestock in the region and caused large scale starvation and deaths of nearly half a million people - over half the population. Pestilence was also rampant. To avoid a repeat of such a dire situation, dams or ‘acudes' have been constructed across the region. They help harness the water of River Jaguaribe better so that it doesn't run dry anymore.
